He relates the story of Edward Sheriff Curtis, a photographer who went around the USA in 1900 taking pictures of various Native peoples (King, 2003, p. 32). The problem with Curtis is that he was looking for the literary Indian, the dying Indian, the imaginative construct , so much so that he took along boxes of 'Indian' props to dress up people who did not fit that image. King compares this 'literary Indian' to the Indian of Fact , which are the real Native Americans who do not fit into people's expectations at all most of the time. The problem, then, is not who people are, but what others think they should be based on their own stereotypes. While we might like to assume this sort of thing does not happen again, King mentions a lot of current day examples, including ones that involve himself. He mentions some pointed questions he was made to answer when applying for a PhD grant from the USA government. These questions were a kind of authenticity test, a racial-reality game that contemporary Native people are forced to play . This game, even when it's started by other people who are themselves Natives, basically forces people into the roles created by this made-up 'literary Indian' that King talked about earlier. He notes that most people don't even bother asking questions, but instead simply [look] at you. If you don't look Indian, you aren't. If you don't look White, you're not . One of the things that King is most worried about is not just racism or stereotyping, but how these play into government decisions. He points out that Northern American nations have not been very good about keeping up with the treaties they made with Native nations. King says that we like to: tell ourselves about injustices and atrocities and how most of them has happened in the past. We tell ourselves that, as we have progressed as a species, we have gotten smarter and more compassionate. War of the Worlds Prose Essay The novel The War Of The Worlds was written in 1898 by H.G Wells. Wells was a well known author, he write many other books this being his most successful. In this period of time optical microscopes only recently became powerful enough to see bacteria, transportation was only by foot, bicycle, horse and steam engine if you had the money. The only communication over a distance was by telegraph, this was done by tapping out words. The book was so successful it was made into a radio play in 1936 which was so realistic it cause panic. In 1996 Independence Day was filmed using wells ideas. Then in 2005, Steven Spielberg made the film The War Of The Worlds Starring Tom Cruise. It release was delayed because of 9/11 had made people so fearful that terrorism would overthrow our way of life. For this to happen the book must be very popular. When the novel was written was in 1898 Britain ruled over 25% of the world. The British people were used to invading different countries and winning battles and wars. In the novel London is being over powered by the Martians who landed in Horsell Common from Mars. Wells sets the play just outside London an area that is well known to him, he uses real place names like Horsell, Sunbury, Twickenham, Fulham this makes the reader more involved in the book and make it feel more like a real life situation. I think Wells chooses to use a narrator in the novel by doing this as well writing in the first person, its as if its real, as if were watching events through the narrators eye to make a bigger description of what is going on and the surroundings more clearer. The effect of switching to his brother in London gives a different perspective on what was happening in the book and how it effected different people. Wells chooses to use very few main characters I think this is because wells tries to make you feel as if you were in the book, there wouldnt be main people as you would be moving away from the Martians. He uses his wife, the artilleryman, the curate I think he does this to show thats what you would call them if you were there at that time. I think the detailed description of the places make to the novel such a hit because it engages the readers interest making you feel part of it. When the first Martian shows moods change from excitement to distress to dread. The novel is split into two, the first part describing the places and how the Martians arrived, attacked, killed and destroying things and trying to take over. It has 112 pages and is over 6 days whereas the second part is from 7th to 22nd day but lacking much detail this part is about how the Martians take control over Earth, the killing of the Martians and the red weed dying. I think the book is not easy to read as some of the language is quite hard to understand, but you can understand the basic plot of it. I think the book would be a great hit in this day and age but maybe for a more experienced reader.

Hamlet: Tragedy in Hamlet The tradition of literature includes many genres. One of the oldest and most important of these genres is tragedy; one of the foremost Elizabethan tragedies in the canon of English literature is Hamlet by William Shakespeare and one of the earliest critics of tragedy is Aristotle. One way to measure Shakespeare's work is to appraise it using the methods of classical critics and thereby to see how if it would have retained its meaning. Hamlet is one of the most recognizable and most often quoted tragedies in the all of English literature. Aristotle, is concerned with the proper presentation of tragic plays and poetry. Aristotle defines tragedy as: "...a representation of an action that is worth serious attention, complete in itself, and of some amplitude; in language enriched by a variety of artistic devices appropriate to the several parts of the play; presented in the form of action, not narration; by means of pity and fear bringing about the purgation of such emotion. (Aristotle 38 - 9) Shakespeare uses character, plot and setting to create a mood of disgust and a theme of proper revenge, as opposed to fear and pity, hence Aristotle would have disapproved of Hamlet. It is the above mentioned elements; character, plot and setting, used in a non-Aristotelian way, that makes Hamlet work as a one of the English language's most renown tragedies. By proper revenge we refer to the Elizabethan view that revenge must be sought in certain cases, for the world to continue properly. This is the main plot of Hamlet. In Poetics, Aristotle defines for us, the element of plot and shows us how he believes it must be put together. He also believes in various unities which he states are necessary for a proper tragedy. Aristotle believes in what he calls "Unity of plot" (Aristotle 42 - 3). This "Unity" leaves no room for subplots, which are crucial to the theme of Hamlet. Without the subplot of Laertes' revenge and the subplot of Fortinbras' revenge, we are left with a lugubrious play where the ending, although necessary, is pointless. The three sub-plots together as a unit, allow us to understand what Shakespeare thought of revenge. Another of the ways Aristotle defines plot in tragedy as "The noble actions and the doings of noble persons"(Aristotle 35). By this definition, Hamlet should be a noble person, who does only noble things. Aristotle would have objected to Hamlet's refusal to kill Claudius during prayer which forms the turning point of Hamlet. This is significant because if he were to have achieved his revenge at that point Claudius' soul may have been clean. Hamlet wishes to get revenge when Claudius' "Soul may be damned and black / As hell, whereto it goes (Shakespeare 3, 3, 94 - 5). By waiting for the right time, Hamlet loses his chance to achieve revenge. This ignoble act does add to the theme of proper revenge, not in the primary plot, but when all three revenge sub-plots are considered together. Aristotle also believed in heros that are "First and foremost good (Aristotle 51)." Although Hamlet spends much time deliberating good and evil, and what the greatest good is, when it comes time, he cannot act. Laertes does act, but he acts rashly, and cannot perform good either. Fortinbras is the type of hero that Aristotle would have preferred, although from Fortinbras' point of view the play is not tragic; instead it is a comedy where all of the other characters run about and in the end through no fault of his own, Fortinbras receives the kingship of Denmark. The plot events with which Aristotle disagrees give meaning to Hamlet's theme. Shakespeare uses the plot to help create the mood of Hamlet by incorporating subplots and by having his tragic hero do things which are particularly unheroic. Hamlet's treatment of Ophelia is particularly barbaric. By the same token Ophelia's unstinting devotion to her father, and by that ,her poor treatment of Hamlet causes us to question which of the two is not the worthier, but the least evil. Both of their actions invoke disgust. Aristotle would have objected to Hamlet's treatment of Ophelia because of his aforementioned belief in the character attributes of the hero. The only characters who act particularly heroic are Horatio, who is devoted to Hamlet, and Fortinbras. These two characters are the only ones who survive. Subjectivity in Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth      Ã‚   Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth presents an interesting study of the social construction of subjectivity. The Victorian society which Wharton's characters inhabit is defined by a rigid structure of morals and manners in which one's identity is determined by apparent conformity with or transgression of social norms. What is conspicuous about this brand of social identification is its decidedly linguistic nature. In this context, behaviors themselves are rendered as text, and the incessant social appraisal in which the characters of the novel participate is a process of deciphering this script of behavior. People's actions here are read, as it were, according to the unique social grammar of this society. The novel's treatment of this conception of social reading is brought to the fore through its devaluing of written texts in favor of legible behaviors.    The novel signals this pattern from its opening. In the first scene we are introduced to Selden, engaged in what we discover is a typical activity for the novel's personae, the silent, personal, interrogation of another person. "If she had appeared to be catching a train," we are told, "he might have inferred that he had come on her in an act of transition between one and another of the country houses which disputed her presenceÃ…  "(5†¹emphases mine). Here, Selden, at his first glimpse of Lily, has taken to conjecturing all manner of explanations for her simple presence in the train station. A Civilized Society What is the meaning of a society? A historian might say a society is a group of people living in an ordered community that has a hierarchy. An adult might say that a society is a community of people that have certain jobs and a community that has schools for their children to go to. A child might not even know what the meaning of society is. Their answers differ because there is not a book written in history that clearly defines what a society is. But when â€Å"society† is narrowed down into â€Å"civilized† society, it is here that agreements are distinguished.Most people agree that the time and place they live in at this present moment is civilized, even though spirits are still believed in. This also means that time periods that are not considered â€Å"civilized† in today’s terms, are considered civilized to the people living in that time period. In the book Beowulf, a book written in the seventh or eight century by an anonymous au thor, there are two societies, the Danes, who reside in Denmark, and the Geats, who reside in southern Sweden.This book is named after a person; not surprisingly, this person is named Beowulf, a Geat who later becomes the king of the Geats. The Anglo-Saxon society in the book Beowulf is civilized because they believe in monsters and their leaders and group members have clear expectations. One might be surprised that a civilized society believes in monsters, however, even societies today believe in monsters through television. Societies today create horror movies purely for entertainment; however, it is a known fact that the monsters in the horror movies are not real.On that note, the anonymous author of Beowulf may have written the book purely for the entertainment of his people, all the while knowing that monsters do not exist, after all, it is probably the closest thing his society has to watching a horror movie. Grendel, the first monster Beowulf fights, is â€Å"conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain (105-106). † This is physically impossible because Cain is a human and Grendel is an actual monster in the book.Another fact that Beowulf was written for entertainment purposes is the fact that the author uses suspension of disbelief, meaning that the readers believe things that are impossible in real for the sake of enjoying the book. For example, â€Å"[Beowulf] sank through the waves†¦(1495)† â€Å"for hours†¦(1495)† to fight Grendel’s mother, â€Å"the mighty water witch (1519). † This is an example of suspension of disbelief because it is physically impossible for a human to swim under water for hours without breathing.The Anglo-Saxon society is a civilized society because while today’s society creates horror movies for entertainment, the author creates the book, Beowulf, for the entertainment of his people. As stated above, a society is a community of people that have certain jobs they must perform. This definition of a society is a factor of what a civilized society is. In Anglo-Saxon culture, a leader and his comitatus have clear expectations. In today’s society, a leader leads the country and commands his people through the office of the prime minister.However, a leader in Anglo-Saxon culture does a little more than leading his country and commanding his people. In the book, Beowulf, there are two main leaders: Hrothgar (a Danish king) and Beowulf. These two leaders have the responsibility of bringing glory for their country. When Hrothgar took the throne after his father, he â€Å"led the Danes to such glory that comrades and kinsmen swore by his sword (65-66). † Beowulf brings glory to his country by killing Grendel, the beast that has been haunting Herot for a long time, and by killing Grendel’s mother, â€Å"the mighty water witch (1519). Then when Beowulf becomes the king of Geatland, he â€Å"†¦held it long and well (2208). †A s a leader has responsibilities, group members also have their responsibilities. In today’s society, they are responsible of helping each other, but sometimes they do not always carry out the task. However, a comitatus in Anglo-Saxon society have the responsibility of helping the leader when he needs help. There was only one comitatus in Beowulf and they are Beowulf’s men. Beowulf’s comitatus are by his side during his three battles. However, Beowulf’s comitatus was readily available to help him in one out of the three battles.During the battle with Grendel, â€Å"all of Beowulf’s/Band had jumped from their beds, ancestral/Swords raised and ready†¦(795-796). † This is only battle that Beowulf’s comitatus is readily available in to help. During Beowulf’s battle with Grendel’s mother, the Danes left the swamp thinking Beowulf had died, but â€Å"the Geats stayed, sat sadly, watching,/Imagining they saw their lord but not believing/ They would ever see him again(1602-1603). † It is here that we start to see that the role of the comitatus start to change because the comitatus are at shore while Beowulf was under water, so, if Beowulf eeded their help, they would not be able to help him. In Beowulf’s last battle, the battle against the dragon, â€Å"none of his comrades/ Came to him, helped him (2596-2597)† when Beowulf could not fight the dragon alone, they also ran away for their lives. At this point in the story, the role of a comitatus is no more. The Anglo-Saxon society is civilized only when the leaders and team members, the comitatus, carry out responsibilities. The Anglo-Saxon society is civilized because they believe in monsters through stories, and their leaders and comitatus have responsibilities, although sometimes the comitatus do not perform their responsibility.It is because they do not perform their duty in the battle with the dragon that the age of warriors end s. One can argue that the age of warriors is a civilized time period, however, when the comitatus ran away from the battle, it is there that signs of an uncivilized civilization is seen. Therefore, it can be said that â€Å"now the giving of swords, of golden/ Rings and rich estates, is over,/ Ended for you and everyone who shares/ Your blood: when the brave Geats hear/ How you bolted and ran none of your race/ Will have anything left but their lives(2884-2888). †
